A male body is found at Chester Zoo one morning. He appears to have fallen off a high folding ladder. The pathologist is puzzled that his face is seriously injured, but his hands are not. Why didn’t he put them out to deaden his fall? Why was he in the zoo at night with a ladder, and who was he? Why did he use a false name to check into one of the Zoo lodges? DCI Drake and his sergeant, Grace Hepple, investigate.
Drake and Hepple soon find themselves in the fascinating world of film animation. Why is everybody so secretive? The body was near the orangutan enclosure. Is this significant, and if so, why? A list grows of people who might have wanted the victim dead. Drake and Hepple discover some violent candidates, all with convincing motives. People who worked with the victim find themselves in danger, and even Drake and Hepple are threatened. The victim had recently been to the extraordinary island of Borneo. They search for answers there and encounter even more secrecy and danger.
